Dolpo, which means "hidden land" in the Tibetan language, is a wild and breathtaking region in the Himalayas. For a very long time, Dolpo was an unknown territory. However, a few anthropologists and geographers have been there and exposed the area's natural beauty and rich history. Beautiful ancient Buddhist monasteries, such as Bon monasteries and yak caravans to the Trans-Himalaya, may be found at Dolpo. Only in 1989 was the Upper Dolpo trip made accessible to outsiders, and Shey Gumba was opened to international visitors only in 1992. Because of easy access to forbidden Tibet from Nepal, the region's mystique and Crystal Mountains, the unspoiled sangria-la and pockets of unspoiled Tibetan culture, and the breathtaking mountain scenery, which stretches from high-altitude passes to the Jomsom Corolla classic route into the windy valley, the northern part remained closed for a very long time.

Different walking routes in the Upper Dolpo.

Dolpo to Traverse Rara

Shey Gumba is the starting point for yet another adventurous hiking route in Dolpo. This journey travels through a highly isolated section of the Dolpo region, following the GHT path. It crosses over three additional passes above 5000 meters, as well as Bhijer and Phot Gaun, the final settlement in Dolpo. NGIMAS GYALJEN pass 5860 meters included. After Phot village, you won't see people or visit villages for several days in this remote part of the Himalayas. The journey ultimately finishes in Mugu district, along the banks of the Karnali River.

Upper Dolpo to Annapurna Travers

The Upper Dolpo trip would take an extra week or more if one were to complete the Annapurna Traverse via the Dhorpatan Wildlife Reserve. Over the JALJALA Lekh, there is a three-day period when you pass almost no villages.

Road access is also available from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, however the journey takes some time. There is now an off-road connection from Nepalgunj to Dolpo. Depending on the season, an off-road, tough journey takes around three days. Direct driving is not feasible during the wet season.

Although there isn't a direct flight from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Jufal, it is still feasible to go there without spending the night in Nepalgunj provided you have a large party or can arrange chartered planes or a helicopter. Flights at Juphal, a tiny mountain airport, are frequently delayed by inclement weather.

Accommodation & Meals:

Certain locally produced goods, such rice, potatoes Champa, barley flour, and seasonal vegetables, are available, but they shouldn't be depended upon. That's why it's best to carry the majority of food storage on your own. For the duration of the excursion, you will have a professional guide together with your cook, kitchen boy, spare boy, Sherpa guy, and any mules needed for hauling gear with a driver. The culinary crew will provide hot beverages for breakfast, lunch, and supper. Good mattresses and other necessities like dining tents, sleeping tents, sleeping bags, and kitchen tents will be provided. Basic tea establishments and lodging are available in some locations.

Road:

The rugged, difficult route that connects Lowland to Dolpo was recently completed. Although there are frequent Jeep driving services, the journey is still exceedingly tough, and passengers must change Jeeps many times before reaching Dunai at Dolpo owing to rivers and road conditions. The rocky road continues past the Dunai till Tarakot, but Jeep is still unable to drive on it. The road from Charka Bhot to Mustang Bhot is also being constructed, although Jeeps are the only vehicles on it. Locals occasionally drive Tibetan bicycles.

Difficulty:

In the Dolpo, trekking is regarded as difficult. There are several passes over 5000 meters, hard ascents and descents, and several nights spent sleeping over 3500 meters. On certain days, we will be walking for more than 10 hours across arid and dusty terrain. Trekking in the dry region of Dolpo is physically demanding and entirely unpleasant.

Permits & Regulations:

For upper Dolpo, you require a special permit, often known as a limited permit. A group of trekkers should consist of at least two members. Individual hikers or solitary persons will not be granted permits.
Lower Dolpo: $20 USD per week plus $5 USD per day for extra days
Upper Dolpo: US $500 for ten days, then US $50 a day for the remaining days.

Drinking Water:When drinking water, visitors to Nepal should use utmost caution. They are not fully adapted to digest ordinary spring water because of bacteria. For this reason, we suggest that you drink mineral or hot water. In addition, you may purify the water while trekking with different pills, such as those containing chlorine. We strongly advise utilizing mineral water in the city and boiled or filtered water when trekking.

Meals:On the trekking, we will supply hot beverages like tea, coffee, and boiling water for drinking or filling water bottles, along with three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and supper). However, we will not be providing lunch or dinner while you are seeing the city.

Battery Charging: There is seldom any energy available for charging batteries on this walk. Therefore, we advise you to pack a solar charger or a sufficiently strong power bank. In certain places, solar panel chargers and electricity are available, although not in the vicinity of camping spots.

Altitude sickness:Acute mountain sickness, often known as altitude sickness, is characterized by symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, exhaustion, lack of appetite, and fast heartbeat. The reduced oxygen content and air pressure have an impact on hikers, skiers, and mountain climbers. It happens when an individual is unable to adjust to a greater altitude. After the fluid starts to leak from the blood arteries, it typically occurs in the brains or the longs.
High-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) is the term for the condition that results in decreased consciousness, headaches, nausea, appetite loss, fatigue, and a desire to lie down and do nothing. It also causes problems with balance and coordination. You have dry coughing and shortness of breath if the fluid builds up in your lungs, High altitude pulmonary edema is characterized by blood in the cough, skin discoloration, and tightness in the chest (HAPE).

Prevention:We must practice basic gravity behaviors in the mountains, such as patience, constancy, and discipline, to avoid serious mountain sickness. Avoid increasing your altitude quickly, drink enough of water, acclimate your body to a higher altitude, abstain from alcohol, eat regularly, go to lower altitudes for sleep, and stay away from high altitudes if you have heart or lung problems. If symptoms appear, the basic course of therapy for acute mountain sickness is to quit climbing and go to a lower elevation.
